There have been many discussions whether it is necessary to do prostate cancer screening. Prostate cancer is a growing problem because number of new cases increase every year. For now, prostate specific antigen (PSA) is only marker for early detection of cancer but the test is not highly specific. Because PSA levels may be elevated by different, benign conditions this leading to far more unnecessary biopsies and treatment. There is a growing number of advocates of opportunistic screening because is tailored to individual patient characteristic. The number of new cases of prostate cancer in Varazdin County and in Croatia has been increasing every year. For this reason, a pilot project for early detection of prostate cancer was started in Varazdin County and its main goal is to collect data that would become a base for creating a model for the fight against prostate cancer at a national level. Aim of the study was assess value of such pilot project by SWOT analysis methodology. Specific aim was to assess factors related to response to public health campaign for prostate cancer screening and influence of opportunistic screening to patient response rate. Result showed that most of patients (71,35%) who enrolled for PSA testing got information about screening program from their Family Doctor, compared to regional television program which was origin of information for only 10.22% patients who enrolled for PSA testing. Furthermore, when asked about main influence for entering prostate carcinoma screening program, patients named Family Doctor as their first choice (59,44%), and their own health habits as second choice (19,89%). Results stressed importance and benefits of opportunistic screening methodology in improving response rate for screening programs even if they were run through public health campaign. SWOT analysis showed Strengths of primary health care as promotor of response rate in public screening programs; Weaknesses in organization and task allocation within health service; Opportunities in development proper guidelines and improvement of collaboration of public health sector and other health service resources; and Threats in absence of sustainability of preventive health programs partly related to financing issues.
