The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected lives of people around the world. The lockdown and other measures were imposed to suppress the spread of the virus. However, they affected the spread of other diseases as well. Experiences of other ENT clinicians mostly showed that the number of urgent ENT procedures has reduced for diseases that have an inflammatory etiology, compared to the period before the pandemic. The goal of this paper is to determine whether there has been a similar reduction in the number of urgent ENT procedures at the University Hospital Centre Sestre milosrdnice, and to try to answer the following question: is the reduced spread of infectious diseases responsible for the eventual drop in the number of procedures. The data was extracted from the operational protocols of the Clinic of ENT head and neck surgery, from the January 1, 2019 to March 25, 2021. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistical methods. Procedures were divided in 4 categories, including foreign body bronchoscopy as a control group. 147 procedures were included in the paper, 123 of which were more closely analyzed in comparison to the pandemic and the pre-pandemic year. The observed drop in the number of urgent procedures was 51.2% in the pandemic year. Between the categories the drop was 85.7% for acute otitis media, 33.3% for chronic otitis media, 41.7% for head and neck abscesses and 27.8% for bronchoscopies. The dynamics of the number of procedures showed that the reduced spread of infectious diseases could partially account for the drop in the number of acute otitis media procedures; also, the fear of COVID-19 infection in both patients and doctors could to some extent account for the drop in the number of head and neck abscesses. The dynamics of bronchoscopy numbers differs significantly from other categories which is probably related to a different etiology compared to other conditions. Finally, the decrease in the number of procedures and the regional hospital system rearrangement imply that there has been a reduction in the incidence of urgent inflammatory ENT procedures at University Hospital Centre Sestre Milosrdnice.
