The nasal valve is defined as the narrowest segment of the nasal cavity and is located distal to the piriform opening. Therefore, if nasal valve insufficiency (NVI) develops, nasal obstruction is often the result. The most common cause of NVI is primary rhinoplasty, and other common causes are traumatic, congenital, and anatomical. The nasal valve is divided into its internal and external component. Insufficiency of the internal valve occurs mainly due to anatomical narrowing which is called static obstruction, while insufficiency of the external valve is usually a result of negative pressure that occurs during inspiration which is called dynamic obstruction. The diagnosis of NVI is most successfully made by a thorough history and clinical examination. Additional tests that may help are rhinomanometry, acoustic rhinometry, and a CT scan of the paranasal sinuses. Surgery is the primary way to treat NVI, although there are several non-surgical methods for patients who cannot access surgical treatment. This paper provides an overview of the most common and some newer surgical methods used in the treatment of NVI and compares their advantages and disadvantages to make the selection of the optimal surgical technique for an individual patient as simple as possible.
