The bladder is the fourth most common cancer in men and the ninth in women in Croatia. Bladder cancer is the most common indication for bladder removal. After removal, it is necessary to form an alternative route of urine collection in order to preserve renal function. Urostomy is an operatively performed opening that allows the drainage of urine through the abdominal wall to the surface of the abdomen, it belongs to the group of incontinent derivations. The combination of malignant disease, radical surgery and the nature of derivation leads to a violation of the physical, mental and social integrity of the patient. In order to minimize the consequences of the new situation, it is crucial to carry out treatment and care in a timely manner, in accordance with holistic principles. The basis of a holistic approach to health is to view man as an individual with all his peculiarities and needs. The idea of holism was first mentioned by the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates (460. – 377. BC). In the care of patients with urostomy, evidence-based procedures are used that allow individual access to the patient according to his needs. Such care contributes to the reduction of postoperative complications and faster recovery, as well as the reduction of treatment costs. The result of holistic action is the strengthening of hope, dignity, self-discipline, a sense of autonomy, vitality and social growth, which ultimately leads to complete recovery of the patient and achieving a quality of life as similar as possible to the disease.
