Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, i.e., hyperglycemia. It is one of the most widespread diseases in the world. The incidence has been on the rise in the last twenty years, which makes DM a major public health problem. The management of patients with DM has changed significantly over the years, from the very monitoring of blood sugar levels to the treatment of the disease. The most important historical event was the discovery of insulin, which enabled the treatment of the disease. The quality of life of patients is improving every day thanks to advances in technology whose combination with medicine has ushered us into a new era of DM treatment. The greatest progress has been made with the help of CGM devices (continuous glucose monitoring), which enable minimally invasive monitoring of blood sugar concentration. Using the device, patients are able to continuously monitor blood glucose levels and the trends in concentration over a period of time. Nowadays, in addition to easier diagnostics, there are also technological solutions in the form of a simpler therapy. Insulin pumps are devices by which insulin, depending on the needs, is delivered subcutaneously to the patient. Depending on the device settings, the pumps have two options: continuous basal release or bolus insulin administration with prior data entry by the user. The ideal solution for the care of patients with DM would be a unique invention that combines the previously mentioned technologies and achieves the simultaneous measurement of blood sugar concentration and the application of an adequate amount of insulin.
