During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare processes and patient behavior were disrupted and changed, resulting in a decrease in cancer incidence for most cancer sites. The pandemic affected the behavior of patients who, due to fear of infection and other causes, were less willing or less able to access the healthcare system. In addition, the availability of health services was reduced because of the mobilization of doctors and other health workers to positions crucial for controlling the pandemic. Preventive programs and screening were temporarily suspended, and laboratories were overcrowded with COVID-19 diagnostics. Such a situation resulted in the slow operation of the registers and led to a delay in information. Given these circumstances, most registries have recorded a decline in the incidence of malignant diseases, which was particularly pronounced in the first half of 2020. Some of the data indicates a recovery in the numbers in the second half of 2020, and then in 2021, but so far there is no data that would indicate that the situation has completely returned to the pre-pandemic state. It is possible that this reduction in incidence will result in worse outcomes in terms of diagnoses being made in more advanced stages of the disease, with reduced therapeutic options and ultimately higher mortality from cancer. At this moment, based on the existing data, it is not possible to predict the long-term effect on the population, nor is it yet possible to assess whether there has been a complete recovery of incidence in 2021 and 2022.
