Minimally invasive surgery is a surgical technique that uses small incisions and specialized instrumentation to perform the procedure while causing less tissue damage. The development of minimally invasive surgery methods began at the beginning of the twentieth century, but it was only at the end of the century with the invention of video equipment that it began to be used more widely. The development of robotics has enabled the use of robot assistant systems in surgery since 2000. The first laparoscopic operations were performed in the departments of gynecology and abdominal surgery. By using small incisions to insert instruments and using a CO2 insufflator to create an operating space, it is possible to perform most open surgeries. Compared to open surgery, laparoscopic methods achieve faster postoperative recovery, fewer complications, less pain ,more favorable aesthetic effect, and have become the gold standard methods for a large number of procedures. Minimally invasive surgery methods have an important role as a diagnostic tool due to the use of local anesthesia, quick recovery and the possibility of performing the procedure on an outpatient basis. Arthroscopy, thoracoscopy and hysteroscopy enable a direct visual examination of the corresponding area, taking biopsy material and, if necessary, therapeutic intervention. Robot assistant systems such as the Da Vinci system or the SENHANCE system are designed to use and upgrade the principles of minimally invasive surgery. Robotic systems are controlled using a control console and allow a greater range of motion than with laparoscopic instruments. Robot-assisted surgery achieves good results compared to endoscopic and openl surgery and has become the method of choice for certain operations, such as radical prostatectomy. The high initial price, expensive expendable material and demanding learning curve prevent wider use.
