Abstract (english) The human history is made out of the intertwined conflicts, turmoil and numerous different stressful events that have a great influence on a person. In today’s world, when fast pace of living and exposure to different risks is a common thing, people are more and more exposed to traumatic events and experiences, either as victims or witnesses of violence which can lead to development of post-traumatic stress disorder.
A little more than twenty years ago Croatian history was marked by war and, although it finished, Croatia today is still facing its consequences, one of which is a large number of people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a complex psychiatric disorder that occurs since the beginning of the civilization, but only to be defined about thirty years ago. Post-traumatic stress disorder, like many other psychiatric disorders, affects not only the patient but also his family and his wider social surroundings. Over the time, the symptoms of the disorder progress and the disorder itself becomes chronic. Consequently, the patient’s ability to function in everyday life and work environment drops, and it only shows how important the early detection, treatment and prevention are for a patient. Post-traumatic stress disorder treatments involve pharmacotherapy, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy and other psychotherapies. The role of a nurse covers a wide spectrum of necessary abilities, when it comes to patients who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. From appropriate communication skills up to complex processes of nurse care required for that type of patient. Taking care of patients who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder requires a great amount of knowledge, patience and empathy.
