Gestational trophoblastic disease is a group of benign and malignant tumors which histologicaly originate from the placenta. They occur as a result of abnormal trophoblastic proliferation. According to the clasification of the world health organisation, GTD is divided into molar prengancy and malignant trophoblastic tumors. Hydatiform mole is the most common molar type of the disease and choriocarcinoma is the most common malignant type. Women with higher risk for developing GTD are the ones with pregnancies at older age, the ones with series of spontaneous abortions and the ones who were taking combined oral contraceptives. Diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease is based on clinical presentation, abnormal β-HCG levels and ultrasound and is mostly made in the first trimester of the pregnancy. When diagnosis is made it is important to imediately start the treatment which should be adjusted to the patient herself and the type of the disease.Treatment should be also ajdusted according to the present risk factors. Benign types can develop into the malignant ones, so the disease requires serious approach. Treatment consists of wide spectar surgical methods along with the farmacological treatment. Every patient should be monitored at least for 6 months after the treatment. Prognosis is often excelent even for the patients with outspread metastases. Fertility is often preserved and later pregnancies are possible. Even though GTD is a rare condition with excelent prognosis it should be considered seriously with good clinical, diagnostic and therapy knowledge.
