Through history people isolated and stigmatized psychiatric patients but French revolution brought humanistic approach to them. Reason for isolation of such persons often was aggressiveness and agitation because they represented danger for society. Agitation can be defined as state of psychomotor excitation and restlessness. Aggression is act of attacking other person which purpose is to produce harm to that person. Agitation as part of mental disorder can be seen in psychotic disorders, mania, agitated depression and anxiety disorders. Cause of agitation can be also physical illness. Aggression also comes with some mental disorders but biological and social economic factors also have effect on development of aggression. Discovery of chlorpromazine in 1952 was revolution in psychiatry. After its discovery, there was intense development of psychopharmacology and many other effective drugs were discovered. Medical professionals should try to calm agitated and aggressive person but most often pharmacotherapy is given and person is hospitalised. Most common combination is benzodiazepines+antipsychotics. Involuntary hospitalisation of person who can harm herself or other persons is regulated by Mental Health Act. Nonpharmacological methods of treatment are less effective but can be used on agitated persons with dementia.
