Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, which also records a continual increase in incidence due to the overall ageing of the population. It develops as a result of degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra which is caused by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors, but the exact cause of it remains unknown. The most significant characteristics of the disease are the motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidness, tremor in the state of inactivity, and postural instability, but more often the non-motor symptoms hinder the quality of life. Some non-motor symptoms include orthostatic hypotension, constipation, dysphagia, anxiety, and depression. Consequently, dysphagia can lead to aspiration pneumonia, which is the leading cause of death among those diagnosed with Parkinson's, and orthostatic hypotension causes falls and fractures that can result in death. With ageing, advancement of the illness, and the increase in doses of dopaminergic drugs an increasing number and seriousness of non-motor symptoms is expected to occur. Therefore, it is necessary that the whole multidisciplinary team, which is included in taking care of the patient, to become aware of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in order to impede further complications of the illness.
