The majority of research on the supstantia nigra pars compacta was done on rat, cat and monkey experimental models. For this reason, we have decided to determine the basic morphological characteristics of pars compacta neurons in the mouse and compare them with contemporary morphological knowledge acquired through observation of diffe-rent animal models. In our study we used three animals which brain slides we microscopi-ed and marked by the Neurolucida system. We picked thirthy three neurons of pars com-pacta for our study. As was suspected, we found two populations of neurons in the pars compacta: small interneurons and medium sized dopaminergic neurons. Small interneu-rons did not differ from the interneurons studied in the rat, cat and monkey. Morphology of the dopaminergic neurons mostly conformed with previous knowledge based on different animal models. However, we have found the small, short, local dendrites to be much more frequent on some of the dopaminergic neurons. Also, we have found much more numerous nodes on the main, large dendrites of this neuron class. Many of these neurons contain sixth or seventh generation dendrites, while previous studies reported dendrites with only three to five nodes.
