OBJECTIVES: Determine the frequency of thyroid disfunction in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Determine the correlation between thyroid function and laboratory parameters of glucoregulation, lipid profile, biochemical parameters, chronic conditions and comorbidities in patients with diabetes. Link certain types of thyroid disfunction with a specific type of diabetes. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with historical information. RESPONDENTS AND METHODS: 100 subjects admitted to the Department of endocrinology in the last year. The only inclusion criterion was diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Data was collected from the hospital information system. Collected data included the type of diabetes, type of thyroid disorder, body weight, body mass index, hormone levels such as TSH, biochemical parameters such as liver enzyme levels, type of therapy, existence of hypertension, dyslipidemia and chronic conditions. RESULTS: A distribution was made among the patients based on their gender, diabetes type, thyroid disfunction existence and other parameters. Median values and and interquartile range was calculated for each of the categories. A statistically significant difference in the levels of TSH, FT4 and urate was observed in patients with thyroid dysfunction within the population of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Significantly higher levels of TSH were recorded in patients with type 1 diabetes. CONCLUSION: Thyroid disfunction was recorded in 26% of the observed population. A statistically significant deviation was noticed in certain parameters such as TSH levels in patients with thyroid disfunction. Further studies on a bigger population are required to establish a strong link between specific thyroid disorders and specific diabetes types.
