Objective: The aim of this research was to observe the correlation between nasal polyp syndrome and its effects on the olfactory function, and differences between the affected patients and the control group. Also, the aim was to analyze the difference in airflow and nasal resistance, before and after the surgery in order to observe the effect of the surgery on improving the symptoms and quality of life. Study design: prospective study Participants and methods: The research included 30 adult patients, 15 of whom were diagnosed with nasal polyp syndrome and an indication for surgical intervention, while the other half represented the control group consisting of healthy individuals. The research was conducted from January to June 2018 at the Clinical Hospital Center Osijek, at the Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology and surgery of the head and neck. The research relied on subjective impressions of the test subjects via the SNOT 22 test and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and objective results acquired via anterior active rhinomanometry. Results: SNOT 22 test results indicate a visual improvement of almost all symptoms in the diagnosed group, before and after the surgery. In the comparison between the affected and control groups, only the improvement of the olfactory function was detected (P<0.001). The VAS test indicated improvement between the two groups as well. Anterior rhinomanometry data indicated improvement in airflow and nasal resistance after the surgery. Although there is no statistical significance between the control group and diagnosed patients after the surgery, the significant difference is visible between the two groups before the surgery (P<0.001). Conclusion: Nasal polyp syndrome affects the quality of life and olfactory function, and after the surgery both are improved, as well as airflow in the nose.
