OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of clinical symptoms of migraine in children as well as the localization and time of appearance. Furthermore, the aim was to determine the associated migraine phenomena and their frequency. STUDY DESIGN: The study is structured as a retrospective cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The study included 51 children with migraine, examined from 2012 to 2017 at the Department of Pediatrics at Požega General Hospital. The data analyzed were taken from the medical records including: age, gender, clinical status, therapy, EEG, brain MRI, TCD, and frequency. The data were processed in the statistical program MedCalc Statistical Software version 17.8.2. RESULTS: The mean age of subjects with migraine is 13 ranging from 6 to 17, with both sexes approximately equally represented. The headache was usually pulsating and located diffusely. In 76.5% subjects migraine attack happened during the day. Children under the age of 13 more frequently vomited, and other most common phenomena were photophobia (31.4%) and visual symptoms (27.5%). Median of the attacks in one month is 2, while female children have significantly more frequent attacks. CONCLUSION: Migraines occur more frequently in children older than 10 years of age, and in both sexes. The headache is located diffusely and has a pulsating character. Vomiting is the most common symptom associated with the headache. Migraine attacks occur on average twice a month, but more frequently in females. Attacks are more frequent during the daytime, and female subjects are more likely to have an attack which wakes them up during the night.
