Abstract (english) | Aim: The main objective was to assess the completeness of reporting of abstracts of randomized controlled trials published in the field of dental medicine by using the CONSORT for Abstracts guidelines. Specific aim was to assess the change in trend over time regarding reporting.
Materials and methods: We searched in PubMed in order to identify randomized controlled trials published from 2015 to 2020 in 19 journals indexed in the first quartile of the category „Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine“ according to the „Journal Citation Reports (JCR)“. Search results were screened using the predefined eligibility criteria, including parallel, cross-over, split-mouth, cluster and factorial design RCTs. Extraction table was developed in the Microsoft Excel 2016 file, with every item of the CONSORT for abstracts guidelines being judged with Yes, No or Partial depending on the extent to which authors followed upon the CONSORT guidelines. For every abstract, besides CONSORT for abstract items, we extracted information on what was randomized, the design of the trial, and the year a study was published in. Data were analysed using the Microsoft Excel 2016 programme.
Results: The search resulted with 1117 abstracts, and after screening the final number of abstracts was 988. A random sequence generator was used to obtain a random sample of 300 studies. Completeness of reporting of items concerning conclusions (99,67%), objectives (92,17%) and title (83%) were generally well reported. However, other items were poorly reported, the worst being side-effects (7%), funding sources (5,33%) and method of randomisation (1%). There was a positive trend towards higher rates of reporting with the flow of time. The most commonly used design was parallel RCT (243/300; 81%), and most often randomized were the participants (215/300; 71,66%).
Conclusions: Overall, quality of reporting of abstracts of RCTs was low, but improved over time. This research emphasizes the importance of standardization of reporting of abstracts of RCTs and points out to the items that require more attention in order to achieve adequate level of reporting quality. |
