studenata triju studijskih programa Medicinskog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Splitu, studija
Medicine, Dentalne medicine i Farmacije, o utjecaju pušenja duhanskih proizvoda na oralno
zdravlje.
Studenti dentalne medicine i studenti viših godina svih triju studija pokazuju bolje znanje o
učinku duhanskih proizvoda na zdravlje oralne sluznice. Međutim, lošije znanje pokazali su
studenti farmacije.
Abstract (english) | Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of smoking, attitudes
and knowledge among students of the three study programs of the University of Split Medical
School, medicine, dental medicine and pharmacy regarding the impact of smoking tobacco
products on oral health. The specific objectives of this study were to determine whether there
is difference in knowledge, attitudes and habits between students of the third to last year in
relation to gender, study program and year of study. Efforts were also made to determine
whether there is a need for additional education of medical, dental and pharmacy student on
the impact of tobacco on oral health.
Materials and Methods: From the end of May to the beginnig of August 2020, a crosssectional
study was conducted with the aim of determining the habits, knowledge and attitudes
of students of the University of Split Medical School on the impact of smoking on oral health.
The research was based on an online questionnaire via Google forms (Attachment) and it has
been approved by the Ethics Committee of the Medical School in Split. A total of 313 students
participated and the questionnaire contained three parts. In the first part of the questionnare,
which consisted of 15 questions, general data and data related to the experience of cigarette
smoking were collected. The second and third part of the questionnaire were focused on
attitudes and knowledge about the impact of smoking on oral health.
Results: When it comes to the prevalence of smoking tobacco products, 31,9 % of
students have never tried smoking, and the prevalence of smokers and occasional smokers is
27,7 %. The majority of smokers were pharmacy students (32,2 %) and largest percentage of
them (30,3 %) started smoking between the ages of 15 and 18. Compared to medical and
pharmacy students, dental students showed more knowledge about the impact of smoking
tobacco products on oral mucosal health. Students of pharmacy (50,5 %) consider that they
have least necessary knowledge for advising patients on smoking cessation and 87,1 % of all
students expressed a desire for better education. Almost 69,9 % of all students believe that
dentists who smoke less often advise patients to quit smoking and 31,4 % of students stated
that they will lose a patient by counseling about smoking cessation.
Conclusion: In this study we have shown that there is no statistically significant
influence of gender, year of study and study program towards the habits of the students. Dental
students and senior students of all three studies have shown better knowledge of the effect of
tobacco products on oral health. However, poorer knowledge was shown by pharmacy students.
Students of all three studies showed a desire for better education on the topic of counseling
patients to quit smoking. |
