Abstract Cilj istraživanja: Glavni cilj ovog znanstvenog istraživanja bio je ispitati postoji li povezanost
prekomjerne tjelesne težine i pretilosti sa parodontitisom, te utječu li povišeni BMI i omjer
struk/bokovi na težinu parodontitisa. Također, specifični ciljevi su bili ispitati postoji li povezanost
prekomjerne tjelesne težine i pretilosti sa indeksom krvarenja potpornog aparata zuba i plak
indeksom.
dobi, spolu, navikama pušenja, o oralno-higijenskim navikama i redovitosti posjeta odabranom
informacije o kvaliteti života povezanoj s oralnim zdravljem kao i KEP indeks. Ispitnu skupinu

Abstract (english) Objectives: The main objective of this research was to determine the relationship between
overweight, obesity and periodontitis and whether increased BMI and WHR affect the severity of
the periodontal disease. Also, the specific goals were to investigate whether there is a relationship
between overweight and obesity with periodontal bleeding index and plaque index.
Subjects and Methods: A detailed medical history was obtained from each subject (n = 40),
including age, gender, smoking, oral hygiene habits, and regularity of visits to the dentist. Detailed
periodontal examination and radiographic analysis were performed. Information on quality of liferelated to oral health was obtained through the OHIP-14 questionnaire, and overall oral health was
assessed through the WHO Oral Health Assessment Form for Adults. The body mass information
was collected using the BMI and WHR indexes. Based on clinical examination and radiographic
analysis, the test group consisted of 20 subjects diagnosed with periodontitis. The control group
consisted of 20 periodontally-healthy subjects.
Results: This study showed that 80% of subjects with periodontitis had increased BMI, and 50%
had increased WHR. In the control group, only 25% of the subjects had an increased BMI, while
20% had an increased WHR. The median BMI in the test group was 26.90, 3.75, higher than in
the control group, 23.15. The median WHR was also higher in the test group, at 0.85 and 0.80 in
the control group.
All subjects had similar oral hygiene habits, performed oral hygiene with a toothbrush and
toothpaste, and mainly used the same additional products. At the same time, patients in the control
group flossed more frequently, 65% of them, while only 20% of patients in the test group flossed
(P = 0.004). The quality of life regarding oral cavity health is higher in healthy individuals than
those with periodontitis.
Conclusions: In conclusion, BMI and WHR are increased in subjects with periodontitis compared
with subjects in the control group.
Subjects in the control group have better oral hygiene habits than subjects with
periodontitis, and the quality of life regarding oral cavity health is higher in healthy subjects than
in subjects with periodontitis.
