Abstract (english) | Objective: Children and young adults participate in sports activities more frequently nowdays, therefore the occurence of sports-related orofacial injuries, especially dental injuries, has increased. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurence of dental trauma in young athletes, as well as the attitudes about the use of mouthguards.
Materials and methods: A total of 229 young athletes participated in this study. The sports involved were waterpolo, handball, karate and taekwondo. The questionnaire about the occurrence of dental injuries, knowledge about first aid procedures and dental trauma prevention, the knowledge, attitudes and use of mouthguards was conducted on regular practice day.
Results: There were 229 included young athletes in this study, participating in four different sports – waterpolo (N = 59), karate (N = 58), taekwondo (N = 57) and handball (N = 55). There were 157 (68.6 %) male and 72 (31.4 %) female athletes, aged 13 (5-19) years and the average time of participating in sport was 4 (1-16) years. There were 25.3 % (58/229) young athletes who experienced sports-related orofacial injury and 15.3 % (35/229) athletes experienced dental injury. The most frequent dental injury was tooth avulsion (16/35). Mouthguards were used by 94 athletes (41 %), while there were 52 % custom-made, 33 % „boil and bite“ and 15 % were pre-fabricated mouthguards.
Conclusion:The results of this study demonstrated that sports-related dental injuries occur in all contact sports among young athletes and that athletes do not use the mouthguards for prevention of such injuries sufficiently. |
