Abstract (english) | Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine attitudes of dental medicine students at the School of medicine, University of Split and doctors of dental medicine working in Split towards sleep medicine.
Methods: We conducted a study involving a total of 156 subjects (44 males and 102 women) of which 123 dental medicine students and 23 doctors of dental medicine were involved. Of the respondents who completed an anonymous questionnaire, 115 respondents attended the sleep medicine course during their education, while 39 respondents did not. Attitudes towards sleep medicine were investigated using a ASKME questionnaire consisting of 11 statements (S1-S11) that measured the attitudes towards sleep medicine.
Results: We found significant difference in interest towards sleep disorders among students and doctors of dental medicine (3,43±1,00 vs. 4,13±1,10, P=0,003). Unlike dental students, doctors of dental medicine believe that it is necessary to learn more about sleep disorders during their education (3,21±1,10 versus 4,00±1,04, P=0,002). Furthermore, doctors of dental medicine would gladly enroll in a course on sleep medicine if such a course existed in the curriculum in relation to students of dental medicine (3,19±1,15 vs. 3,96±1,30, P=0,004). By analyzing the total number of points reached on 11 questions about the attitude towards sleep medicine among the respondents, the results show that doctors of dental medicine have a higher score compared to students of dental medicine (38,91 ± 5,89 vs. 35,50±5,69, P=0,009). Given the fact that subjects during their education have had the opportunity to listen to sleep medicine and sleep disorders courses, the results show that respondents who have had those courses believe that complete anamnesis also includes questions about sleep quality compared to those who did not have the same experience (4,09±0,88 vs. 3,74± 0,96, P=0,037). By analyzing the total number of points reached on 11 questions about the attitude towards sleep medicine among the respondents due to the fact that during their education they attended a course of sleep medicine, the results of the research show that respondents who have attended such course have a higher score compared to those who did not (36,38±5,87 vs. 34,92±5,78, P=0,1805).
Conclusion: Our research has shown that students and doctors of dental medicine have expressed a positive attitude towards sleep medicine and interest in sleep medicine education, suggesting the possibility of introducing sleep medicine teaching in dental medicine curricula and programs, as well as on other levels of education such as postgraduate and specialist training in dental medicine. |
