Studenti svih studijskih programa imaju podjednako prosječno trajanje spavanja tijekom slobodnog dijela tjedna.
Abstract (english) Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the association between sleeping and dietary habits of students at the University of Split.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study we included medical students (N=437), medical students studying in English (N=141), dental medicine (N=172) and pharmacy students (N=130). From the Faculty of Economics, undergraduate students of the first three study years were included as a control group of respondents (N=152). The total sample consisted of 1032 students, who were involved in the study during May and June 2018. The questionnaire consisted of several subgroups of questions: academic achievement (GPA), height and weight, smoking habits, sleeping habits and dietary habits. We used ꭓ² test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman's correlation test in data analysis.
Results: The Medical students reported on average the shortest sleeping time during working days (6.8 h). Students in all study programs reported the same average sleeping duration during free part of the week. There was a statistically significant difference in sleeping duration during free days between genders (P = 0.001), and female students on average sleep longer (9.0 h). In this study we have showed that only 10.5% of students followed the recommendations for Mediterranean diet with no difference according to gender. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between Mediterranean Diet Serving Score and sleep duration during free days (P<0,001), while this was not the case for workdays (P=0.910).
Conclusion: There was a low level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet in students of all study programs at the School of Medicine and Faculty of Economy at University of Split. Only 10.5% of students followed the recommendations for Mediterranean diet. Medical students reported shortest sleeping time during the workdays of the week. Additional efforts should be placed in order to promote healthy lifestyle among student sin order to prevent chronic diseases in the future.
