Abstract (english) im of the research: This research aims to analyse parents attitudes towards vaccinating pre-school children, and to obtain information on the percentage of children enrolled in school fully vaccinated. Additionally, the goal is to find out what percentage of children are not vaccinated or incompletely vaccinated at the said age.
Methods and Respondents: This cross-sectional survey of attitudes and beliefs was conducted from April 1 to June 15, 2019, at the Teaching Institute of Public Health of Split-Dalmatia County. The same questionnaire was previously used in Zagreb on the attitudes and beliefs of pre-school children’s parents in the capital. The main line of the enquiry is related to the sociodemographic characteristics of the parents, the health status of the child, the vaccine status, the sources of information and the parents' views on vaccination. The data obtained from the questionnaire were entered into a database and displayed using a Microsoft Excel program.
Results: A total of 1090 respondents completed the survey. The parents were asked about the medical history of the child and its vaccine status. Of all respondents, 909 (83.4%) answered that their child had been vaccinated with all compulsory vaccines, and 28 (2.6%) had been vaccinated with additional, optional vaccines. Among the rejected or delayed vaccines, the most common was the measles vaccine. Overall attitudes toward vaccination were positive in 647 (59.4%) of respondents, whilst 14 (1.3%) were negative. An undecided position on vaccination had 423 (38.8%) respondents. Parents most often seek information about their child's vaccination from their GP or paediatrician (N = 956; 88.4%) and fewer in the media (N = 46; 4.3%).
Conclusions: More parents have a positive attitude about vaccination than those who are indecisive, or with a negative attitude. Additionally, a higher percentage of children are fully vaccinated at the right age of those that are only partially vaccinated or unvaccinated. A paediatrician is the most common and important source of information on vaccination for most parents. Only a small proportion of them cite the media as the most important source, but in nearly 50% of parents, media reports raise concerns and fears about vaccination. Despite this, most parents did not think about delaying their child's vaccination because of media reports. If vaccination were not mandatory, less than 50% of parents would certainly continue to vaccinate their children. However, more parents believe that vaccines are safe and effective and that childhood vaccinations should remain mandatory.
