Abstract (english) Goal: The goal of this research paper was to ascertain the frequency of natural anterior teeth dimensions that follow the golden proportion rule in members of South Slavic and Germanic groups, as well as compare the two, since the golden proportion rule is commonly accepted as one of the leading contemporary aesthetic theories.
The null hypothesis was that there is no significant difference in the frequency of morphological characteristics of natural anterior teeth that follow the golden proportion rule between members of the South Slavic and Germanic groups.
Materials and methods: 131 subjects participated in the research, 77 of whom were part of the South Slavic group, with 54 being part of the Germanic group. The criteria for exclusion included cases of reconstructive and fixed prosthodontic treatments on the anterior teeth that needed to be measured. The perceived widths of the central incisor, lateral incisor, and canine on the left side of the dental arch were measured. By using the golden proportion formula, the expected perceived widths of the lateral incisor and the canine were then calculated and compared with the results from the measurement. Perceived widths deviating from the expected dimensions by 5% more or 5% less were considered to follow the golden proportion rule. The results were compared between the two groups, as well as between male and female subjects within the population.
Results: The results of this research have shown that the occurrence of the golden proportion between the central and lateral incisors in members of the South Slavic and Germanic groups was 27.27% and 29.63% respectively. The golden proportion between the lateral incisor and the canine was seen in 3.9% of cases in members of the South Slavic group, and in 9.26% of cases in members of the Germanic group. A significant difference between the two groups was not found. Regarding the relationship between the golden proportion and gender, 29.59% of female subjects had the golden proportion between the central and lateral incisors, as well as 24.24% of male subjects. The occurrence of the golden proportion between the lateral incisor and the canine was seen in 6.12% of female subjects, in addition to 6.06% of male subjects. A statistically significant difference between the two genders does not exist.
Conclusion: From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the occurrence of the golden proportion in the anterior teeth of both members of South Slavic and members of Germanic group is low, despite their different ethnic ancestry, as well as there being no statistically significant difference between the two. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the occurrence of the golden proportion bears no relation to gender.
