RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of brain aneurysms as well as the justification for the use of multiple imaging diagnostic methods (CT, MR, MRA) in the treatment of patients with headache diagnosis who were sent from the Clinic of Neurology at the University Hospital of Split in 2017. PARTICIPANSTS AND METHODS: The desing of the study was retrospective. In the period from January 2017 to December 2017 all of the patients from Clinic of Neurology presented with a symptoms of headache received an MRA scan of cerebral blood vessels due to suspicion of an aneurysm. An inspection of the archives of the Department of Radiology determined the number of positive findings in patients and how many of these patients were sent for CT and MRI brain scans before doing MRA scans of cerebral blood vessels. RESULTS: Out of the total of 161 patients from the Clinic of Neurology, brain aneurysm was detected in 9 cases (5.59%). All 9 diagnosed aneurysms (100%) were small aneurysms, which were less than 11 mm in size. The median age of patients was 53 years. Two thirds of all patients were women. Prior to doing MRA scans of cerebral blood vessels, 77.78% of all patients were sent for CT scans, and 33.33% of all patients were sent for MRI scans. CONCLUSION: The use of multiple imaging diagnostic methods questions the justification of their widespread use. The need for better triage of patients when being sent to do these scans is therefore of great importance. Most headaches can be diagnosed with the proper use of guidelines, as well as by talking a multidisciplinary approach.
