U svim dječjim vrtićima grada Splita postoji trend porasta broja djece s posebnim potrebama, a među njima i djece s teškoćama u razvoju.
Abstract (english) Objectives: The aim of this research was to establish the health profile of preschool children attending child care centers owned by the city of Split by determining vaccine coverage rates, nutritional status, infectious diseases morbidity rates and analyzing number of children who have developmental difficulties and types of their difficulties.
Materials and methods: The research was conducted by retrospective cross-sectional analysis of Yearly reports on accomplishing yearly plan and programme of child care centers in the city of Split, Croatia. Collection, processing and data analysis were perfomed using Microsoft Excel 2013 software programme. The results of the research were shown in line, column and pie charts with quantitative data being expressed as absolute numbers and percentages.
Results: We found that vaccine coverage rates had not reached the recommended 90% in none of the years we analyzed, they were at their lowest with 76% in 2017 and highest with 87% in 2016. The percentage of overweight and obese children in child care centers „Cvit Mediterana“ and „Radost“ has fallen from 23.0% in 2012 to 15.0% in 2018. The most common infectious diseases in child care centers in the city of Split from 2015 to 2018 were chickenpox, acute gastroenteritis and respiratory tract infections. There is an increasing trend in the number of children with special needs in all child care centers in the city of Split. In 2018, child care center „Cvit Mediterana“ evidented 16.9% and child care center „Marjan“ 1.5% of children with developmental disabilities who have a formal expertise decision regarding their special need. The percentage of children with special needs in 2018 in child care center „Radost“ was 9.8% and in child care center „Grigor Vitez“ 10.8%. In child care center „Radost“ from 2012-2018 the largest number of children with developmental disabilities was placed in the category of children with speech and language impairment.
Conclusions: Vaccination coverage rates in child care centers in the city of Split are not satisfactory and additional efforts should be made to educate the population. Although there is an indication of a decline in the number of overweight children, this statement should be taken with a grain of salt. In order to have better data, nutritional status evaluation criteria in child care centers in the city of Split should be equalized. There is a growing number of children with disabilities in child care centers in the city of Split and the largest number of them have a speech and language impairment. This indicates the importance of preschool education, employment of a sufficient number of professional staff and continuous education of all employees.
