Summary: AIM: The purpose of this paper is to search medical database to make a narrative review of literature on water exercises for the knee and hip osteoarthritis. We will evaluate the contribution of water exercises in the treatment of osteoarthritis and their effects compared to some other therapies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the research of this paper the literature of PubMed medical database was studied. The key words in the search were: water exercise osteoarthritis of the knee and hip and hydrotherapy osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. For the analysis of this paper 5 studies were selected, from which 3 studies compared the effects of water exercises with the control group and the remaining 2 with some other therapy. RESULTS: The results of these studies were measured using specific tests, indexes and self-reported scales. In most studies, water exercises had a positive effect on outcome measures and in none of studies did not contribute to the worsening of the condition. In terms of strengthening, gym exercises took precedence over those in water, while more significant progress in fitness was achieved with hydrogymnastics. Due to the relieved movement and less pain, most patients pointed out the positive experiences of training in water. CONCLUSION: Water exercises have shown to be suitable in improving aerobic function, but they are not suitable in strengthening. In severe forms of osteoarthritis, water is an adequate exercise medium because on that way patients can perform exercises of higher intensity with less pain. Although, they do not bring significant pain reduction, water exercises do not worsen the condition and do not result in injuries. It was observed that better outcomes were reported by patients in the earlier stages of the disease.
