Triage plays a key role in the organization of emergency hospital admissions and enables the proper distribution of limited resources in order to achieve the highest possible degree of efficiency for all patients. By introducing unified emergency hospital admission (OHBP) and triage, better quality of emergency care for patients is ensured. Throughout history, triage has evolved from military contexts and adapted to the needs of emergency medical services. The success of triage systems with five categories has proven to be the best option, and various systems such as ATS, CTAS, MTS and ESI are applied. These systems enable quick and precise assessment of patients at the emergency department according to the urgency of their conditions. It is important that triage systems are easy to use, consistent, objective, and enable quick and timely care for patients in accordance with their needs. The role of triage is carried out by nurses or technicians who make decisions about categorizing patients based on the presenting signs and symptoms. Communication, decision-making and adaptability are key skills of a triage nurse. The increased number of patients and the lack of resources can cause delays and errors in the triage process. Therefore, continuous professional development of triage nurses is important in order to perform their work as well as possible. Also, certain groups of people such as children, pregnant women and psychiatric patients require a certain approach and different categorization criteria during triage.
