Gljive (Candida) najčešće uzrokuju kožne i sluznične infekcije.
Nije postojala statistički značajna razlika u učestalosti izolacije vrsta C.albicans i C.nonalbicans u skupini žena koje nisu bile trudne i trudnica (p>0,05).

Abstract (english) Candida is part of a normal flora, it can colonize the skin, mucous membranes and attach to the surface of a foreign body. The most common species that cause diseases are: Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida guilliermondi and Candida lusitaniae.
Fungi (Candida) most commonly cause skin and mucous infections. In women, Candida can cause vulvovaginal infection followed by abundant white discharge and unpleasant disturbances. It can also be transmitted to a newborn at birth. In newborns, a common clinical finding is oral candidiasis with white secretion in the mouth tahat is not followed by signs of systemic infection.
In the present study, it was found that 761 (6.77%) women were positive for Candida of total 11.237 tested in the routine work of the Laboratory for diagnosis of STIs of Public Health Institute. Candida was statistically more frequent isolated in pregnant women (p <0.05). 9345 non pregnant women were tested, and 594 (6.35%) of them were positive for Candida. Of total 1.892 tested pregnant women, 167 (8.83%) were positive. There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of isolation of C.albicans and C.nonalbicans between groups (women who were not pregnant and pregnant women) (p> 0.05). From the 761 positive isolates, 318 (41.8%) were species Candida albicans, while 443 (58.2%) were Candida nonalbicans.
In the present study, it is shown that Candida infection in female genital tract is rare, participants were tested in routine work in a laboratory for STI diagnosis, but we need to think on possibility of transferring fungi Candida on newborns from mothers who have vulvovaginal candidiasis, whether infection or colonization.
