Abstract (english) Urolithiasis is a professional medical term used to describe stones occurring in the urinary tract. The problem is represented around the world, in all cultures, races and geographic location. It is more common in men at a younger age and there is a tendency to relapse.
Given the prevalence of the disease there is a need for rapid and efficient diagnosis. Thus, in our institutions, mainly are used X ray of urinary tract and ultrasound. Intravenous urography, for many years, has been the reference method in the diagnosis of kidney stones. It has been shown that this method cannot detect the cause of the obstruction particularly in the lower part of the urinary tract. Also, the ultrasound showed deficiencies to analyze the ureter and bladder because it reveals only about half of the stones in the ureters. The method is subjective and dependent on many factors that limit it.
In the past decade, the development of CT, particularly MDCT's, changed the diagnostic assessment analysis of the urinary tract. It is enabling better presentation channel system because they use a thin sections, scanning is done extremely quickly and spatial resolution is satisfactory. Also, it can enable good post-image processing that allows 2D and 3D view. However, the exponential increase in the use of CT in recent years has resulted in the increase of radiation dose to patients. It is believed that half of all medical diagnostic radiation is wasted on CT scans. Therefore, many scientists tried to find optimal solutions to reduce the radiation dose without significantly reducing the diagnostic value of exam using different protocols and softwer solutions.
This paper presents the results of authors who in their works analyzed the possibility and value of implementing a "low dose" protocol in the diagnosis of urolithiasis using MDCT imaging method.
