Abstract (english) Aim: To investigate changes in sex life after episiotomy and to show, in percentages, consequences episiotomy on mental and physical health.
Research Hypothesis: There is a difference in satisfaction in sex life after episiotomy.
Methods: The sample consisted of the women who gave birth and the inclusion condition was that they had at least one episiotomy during their births. 2479 women took part in the research. Research was conducted by an electronic questionnaire from April 2018. until June 2019. In the research, women participated voluntarily and anonymously, and the questionnaire used was non - validated and was first compiled for the purpose of conducting this research. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the University of Split.
Results: The highest number of women who answered the questionnaire was 18 to 30 years old and that is 86.6% or 2148 women. The largest number of women had one (69% or 1711 women) or two (26.6% or 660 women) episiotomies. The majority of women abstained from intercourse for two months (38.6% or 957 women), one month (18.8% or 465 women) or three months (18.3% or 453 women). Fear of the first intercourse after episiotomy had (grades 5 and 4 on the Likert scale) 64.7% or 1604 women. 15.8% or 393 women said they didn’t feel the fear on Likert's scale at 1 and 2 grades. 51.1% or 1266 women expressed dissatisfaction with the episiotomy scar. With grades 5 and 4 on Likert’s scale 27.3% or 678 women said that the scar does bother them. Pain during the first intercourse after episiotomy had (grades 5 and 4) 41.8% or 1037 women, and 40.75% or 1008 women (grades 1 and 2) said that they didn’t have pain during the first intercourse after episiotomy. With grades 5 and 4 on the scale 27.6% or 665 women said their intensity of sexual desire wasn’t the same as before the episiotomy, and 56.4% or 1397 women (grades 1 and 2) said their intensity of sexual desire was the same as before the episiotomy. With grades 5 and 4 on the scale, only 4.1% or 103 women said they think their partner has reduced the intensity of the sexual desire, and 90.75% or 2248 women (grades 1 and 2) said they think their partner’s sexual intensity is the same. With grades 5 and 4 on the scale 73.4% or 1818 women said they are satisfied with their sexual life, 7.7% or 190 women (grades 1 and 2) said they are not satisfied with their sexual life.
Conclusion: Women are satisfied with their sexual life after episiotomy and most of them think that their intensity of sexual desire is the same as before. Majority of them felt fear before their first sexual intercourse after episiotomy, and opinions about the feeling of pain at that first intercourse after episiotomy are divided.
