Abstract (english) Aim: To determine whether there are differences in burn out syndrome between nurses at Intensive care unit for adults and nurses at Intensive care unit for newborns and children, and also, to examine the contribution of coping with stress and the degree of burn out to the work satisfaction in nurses employed in Intensive care units.
Subjects and methods: 77 nurses / medical technicians participated in the study, out of which 38 nurses and 3 medical technicians were employed at the Clinic of Anesthesiology, Reanimation and Intensive Treatment (ICU) (N = 41), while 36 nurses were employed at the Department of Women's Diseases and Birth - Neonatology and the Pediatric Clinic - Intensive care unit (PICU) (N=36). Five surveys were used in the research. The first relates to general data (gender, age, length of service and year’s of school). Two surveys examine aspects of burnout: Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (examines the aspects of exhaustion and engagement at work) and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (measure physical and mental fatigue), Coping Inventory for Stressfull Situations (survey dealing with stressful situations), and Job Satisfaction Survey (job satisfaction survey).
Results: In most of the examined aspects of the degree of burnout and coping with stress, no statistically significant differences were found between nurses employed in Intensive Care of Children / Neonatology (jild / neo) and Adult Intensive Care Unit (general jil), while in most of the examined aspects of job satisfaction of nurses in JILD and in Neonatology is significantly higher than the job satisfaction of nurses in the general JIL. Coping with stress and the degree of burnout do not contribute to job satisfaction at nurses employed in Intensive care units, while the degree of exhaustion and burning associated with work and patients anticipates less job satisfaction of nurses in general and children`s ICU.
Conclusion: Given the results of this study, we point the need to improve the work organization and help ICU nurses to develop skills to perform more effectively with professional stress, regarding the development of psychosocial and physical health of nurses.
