Abstract
Sindrom Down najučestaliji je genetski uzročnik intelektualnih defekta u populaciji. Posljedica je trisomije na 21. kromosomu, a očituje se kroz brojne psihičke i fizičke poteškoće kod oboljelih pojedinaca. Najvjerojatniji i najčešće povezivan uzrok je starija dob majke, unatoč sve češćim starijim majkama, broj oboljelih od sindroma nije porastao zbog sve dostupnijih metoda prekida trudnoće. Tijekom cijelog života nailaze na razne probleme i poteškoća, kako zdravstvene tako i socijalne. Ličnost pojedinaca sa sindromom Down općoj populaciji poznata je kao vedra i prijateljski raspoložena, no neka istraživanja povezala su percepciju iskrenosti i naivnosti sa dječjim facijalnim karakteristikama koje oboljeli pojedinci posjeduju. Brojni su i zdravstveni komorbiditeti koji ih snalaze poput urođenih srčanih bolesti, poremećaju u funkciji endokrinog sustava, ADHD-a, autizma i brojnih drugih. Sve češća je i pojava depresije zbog nemogućnosti normalnog funkcioniranja u svakodnevnim životnim prilikama. Izraženi su poremećaji u gotovo svim antropometrijskim karakteristikama. Morfološke karakteristike predstavljaju fizička obilježja poput niskog rasta, izraženih facijalnih karakteristika, skraćenja u kostima i sličnih. Funkcionalne, a posljedično i motoričke funkcije su također narušene, usporen je razvoj govora, čitanja te čitave motorike čime je narušen razvoj hodanja, pisanja, refleksa i brojnih drugih motoričkih reakcija. Smanjena je i fizička aktivnost što dovodi do pretilosti i prekomjerne tjelesne težine koja se kontrolira pomoću indeksa tjelesne mase. Pretilost dalje dovodi do povećanog rizika od kardiovaskularnih bolesti i diabetesa. Iz tih razloga kontrola tjelesne mase u djetinjstvu je važna kako bi se pretilost spriječila na vrijeme te se omogućio što bolji život u starijoj dobi.
Abstract (english)
Down syndrome is the most common genetic cause of intellectual defects in the population. It is a consequence of trisomy on chromosome 21, and is manifested through a number of mental and physical difficulties in diseased individuals. The most likely and most commonly associated cause is the older age of the mother, despite the increasing number of older mothers, the number of people with the syndrome has not increased due to increasingly available methods of abortion. Throughout their lives, they encounter various problems and difficulties, both health and social. The personality of individuals with Down syndrome is known to the general population as cheerful and friendly, but some research has linked the perception of sincerity and naivety to the childlike facial characteristics that affected individuals possess. There are also numerous health comorbidities that affect them, such as congenital heart diseases, endocrine disorders, ADHD, autism and many others. Depression is also becoming more common due to the inability to function normally in everyday life. Disturbances in almost all anthropometric characteristics are expressed. Morphological characteristics are physical characteristics such as short stature, pronounced facial features, shortening in the bones and many alike. Functional and motor functions are also impaired, the development of speech, reading and whole motor skills is slowed down, which disrupts the development of walking, writing, reflexes and many other motor reactions. Physical activity is also reduced leading to obesity and overweight. Obesity further increases cardiovascular risk and risk for diabetes. For these reasons, weight control in childhood is important to prevent obesity and to enable a better life in old age.
