Abstract
Školjkaši (razred: Bivalvia) su bilateralno simetrične životinje iz koljena Mekušci (Mollusca) čije je tijelo zatvoreno dvodjelnom vapnenačkom ljušturom. Najveći broj školjkaša bentoski su organizmi koji žive ukopani u mekanom sedimentu. Raznolikost slatkovodnih školjkaša prema zoološkoj sistematici obuhvaća 4 podrazreda, 5 redova, 19 porodica, 206 rodova i 1.026 vrsta. Najveću raznolikost posjeduje porodica Unionidae koja sadrži 840 vrsta i 161 rod. Glavna središta raznolikosti i endemičnosti slatkovodnih školjkaša su Nearktičko područje (351 vrsta) i Neotropsko područje (226 vrsta). U Europi obitava 48 vrsta školjkaša, od kojih je 10 vrsta (21 %) ugroženo.
Abstract (english)
Mussels (class: Bivalvia) are bilaterally symmetrical animals from the phylum of molluscs (Mollusca) that have body enclosed by a shell consisting of two parts called valves. Most of the mussels are benthic organisms living buried in soft substrate. According to zoological systematics, freshwater mussel diversity comprises 4 subclasses, 5 orders, 19 families, 206 genera and 1,026 species. Highest diversity is in family Unionidae that contains 840 species and 161 genera. Main centres of diversity and endemism of freshwater mussels are Nearctic (351 species) and Neotropic (226 species) zoogeographic regions. The number of freshwater mussels in Europe is 48, of which 10 species (21 %) are threatened.
