Abstract (english) | The Coursebook targets the needs of undergraduate students of English for Specific Purposes, primarily those attending ESP courses at maritime universities. The Coursebook is specifically tailored to cater the grammatical requirements of language learners at a B+ level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). The Coursebook contains six grammatical units which deal with the areas of grammar included in the course syllabi. The materials covered by the units are drawn from various areas of maritime activities and cover some of the basic Maritime English vocabulary. Unit 1 is subdivided into 10 different sections, each of which deals with a given verb tense in English, as well as Unit 5 (Parts of Speech) which is further divided into four separate sections. Every section of the Coursebook has been carefully designed to suit the needs of a heterogeneous language classroom – each section is given the Before we start segment in which the students’ prior knowledge of the topic is established and then consolidated through revision of some of the basic grammatical rules and examples relevant to the topic at hand. The Before we start section is followed by Practical work, and, where relevant, the Translation corner section. Additional information about a given area of grammar (Important to note section) is given at the end of each section in order to incite discussion and offer additional input for those students who would like to learn more about English grammar. The units are followed by Appendices with a Video Bank in which transcripts have been included for all the listening exercises contained in the Coursebook. The Key is an integral part of this Coursebook since it allows for independent student work when teacher’s feedback is not easily obtainable (for example, in the case of part-time students whose classroom participation is not obligatory by the study program). |
