The purpose of this paper is to review and comment on the procedures of the crewmembers, their behavior and the consequences of that behavior that caused the fire on the ship. As an example are chosen two cases where the human factor plays a decisive role in the cause of such an accident. In the first accident the fire started in the ship`s cargo handling space, and the cause of fire is the lack of a continuous fire watch after the hotwork suspension. The ship at the time of the fire was moored in a quarry whom firefighters were not trained in ship fire-fighting techniques, and the consequence of that was a great damage on the stern of the ship. In the second accident the cause of fire was the negligence of the crew and their behavior contrary to the requirements set out. The fire originated because of a lit cigar in the crew`s cabin, while the ship was underway. The AB (Able Seaman) fell asleep drunk while holding a lit cigarette, but according to the ship’s work schedule, AB should have been on watch at the time of the fire. In both the cases, the companies took actions to further reduce the risk of similar accidents. It can also be seen that in both cases the fire wouldn`t happen, or it would be a lot smaller, if the companies consumed more money on some proper fire-proof materials.
