Abstract
Rotacijski strojevi su veliki potrošači električne energije, a kako bi im se omogućio rad moraju se stvoriti određena magnetska polja. Oni za svoj rad troše uz djelatnu snagu (P) i jalovu snagu (Q). Problem predstavlja to što je za stvaranje magnetskog polja potrebna proizvodnja jalove snage. Jalovu snagu je nemoguće trošiti kao koristan mehanički rad, za razliku od djelatne snage. U velikim postrojenjima ona predstavlja čisti trošak, naime operator distribucijskog sustava naplaćuje jalovu energiju. Kako bi se to spriječilo, proizvode se uređaji za kompenzaciju jalove snage. Najpoznatiji uređaji koji kompenziraju jalovu energiju su kondenzatorske baterije.
