Abstract Astma je tisućljećima poznata kao bolest. Svjetska Zdravstvena Organizacija (eng.
Abstract (english) Asthma is known as a disease for thousands of years. The global prevalence of asthma ranges between 1 to 18% depending on the geographical area. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates there are over 300 million people in the world suffering from this incurable disease and that by 2025, the number of asthma affected people will increase by 100 million. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of a pharmacist on improving control and asthma symptoms using a questionnaire prepared in accordance with the original European Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAAC) questionnaire. In November 2014, all pharmacies in the Republic of Croatia were invited to participate in the national public health campaign "Breath easier next to a pharmacist" in order to raise awareness of allergies. The campaign initiator, the European Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology, recognized the importance and unavoidable role of a pharmacist in raising awareness of allergies. The campaign was run and conducted in Croatia by Croatian Pharmacy Chamber and the Croatian Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology. After the delivery of posters and educational leaflets of the European Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology in pharmacies throughout the country in January 2015, pharmacists were invited to a voluntary participation in the campaign by the Croatian Pharmacy Chamber. The survey was conducted between 1 February and 1 April 2015. The campaign included 61 licensed pharmacists of a total of 2558 licensed pharmacists in the Republic of Croatia. There were 172 participants with an average age of 59.00 (40) and an average diagnosis duration of 8.5 (17.5) years. The average number of prescribed medications was 3. Months after providing appropriate interventions, significant changes in asthma control were observed. The number of patients who could not normally perform daily tasks decreased from 47.3% to 24.1%. The nocturnal asthma symptoms decreased from 52.6 to 30.1%. Furthermore, the use of symptomatic drugs decreased from an average weekly value of 2.34 ± 4.27 (N = 162) to 2.34 ± 4.27 (N = 162). The value P = 0.007 indicates that the results obtained are statistically significant. This research suggests that public health campaigns are of great importance and can be very successful. However, greater efforts should be made to encourage pharmacists to participate.
