Abstract (english)
Total parenteral nutrition is usually restricted to the situations where the gastrointestinal tract is non functional or inaccessible. Parenteral nutrition regimens should be tailored to the nutritional needs of the individual and contain the correct amounts of water, protein, carbohydrate, fat, electrolytes, trace elements and vitamins. Ali the nutrients administered intravenously should be mixed together in a single container. The majority of stability problems occurs when the different solutions are mixed together. lncompatibilities with fat emulsions cause the majority of formulation problems. Patients requiring total parenteral nutrition should be assessed clinically and biochemically.
