Smoking is the single greatest preventable cause of death in the world. The new Heat Not Burn Tobacco products, referred to as HNBT, aim to provide a better alternative for the current adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking. HNBT products work in a way such as heating tobacco at much lower temperatures compared to combustible cigarettes, while generating aerosol instead of smoke which is claimed to provide the same pleasure for smokers as the smoke of traditional cigarettes. Furthermore, aim of this thesis was to collect all the possible information about HNBT products and examine their position on the Croatian cigarette market. The product with the greatest presence in the world of smokeless tobacco products at the moment is IQOS. It is Philip Morris International's patent and is already available in 57 countries worldwide. Moreover, concentrations of carbon monoxide, tar, and tobacco specific nitrosamines are all reduced in the IQOS's aerosol, while nicotine levels have remained the same. Tobacco inserts for the IQOS system are called HEETS and contain much more flavors added to tobacco when compared to traditional cigarettes. Most of these flavors are insufficiently researched for inhalation consumption and long-lasting effects. Therefore, one should be extremely careful with the consumption of the same products. Lastly, it has been shown that most IQOS users actually do not completely stop consuming traditional cigarettes, but combine both products. That increases exposure to tobacco components as well as to all other particles present in the IQOS's tobacco vapor and traditional cigarette smoke. Also, HNBT products circumvent the laws that are banning smoking in public as they do not produce smoke. Consequently, it can be wrongfully concluded that HNBT products do not show the risk of passive smoking. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that HNBT products should be treated as strictly as all other tobacco products when it comes to legal restrictions and advising the population on stopping the consumption of all tobacco products.
