Abstract (english) | Water is one of the most important substances on earth and
without it - life as we know it would be impossible. Water is also
an essential substance for the maintenance of human health, as it carries many
nutrients, oxygen, and other important molecules. On the other hand, if taken in
large amounts, water can pose a serious health risk. Namely, excessive water
intake causes acute water intoxication, i.e., acute water poisoning. Signs of acute
water intoxication may include vomiting, nausea, confusion, and convulsions.
Cases of acute water intoxication have been well desc.ribed and documented to
date in all age groups, including infants and small children. The cause of death
from acute water intoxication is related to severe hyponatremia and brain edema.
As drug-induced SIADH poses a risk of a further worsening of hyponatremia, all
health care professionals, including pharmacists and clinical pharmacists, must
keep in mind the importance of taking accurate and detailed medication history. |
