Abstract
Gigantski magnetootpor (GMR) je kvantno-mehanički efekt magnetootpora koji se može opaziti u višeslojnim strukturama sastavljenima od alternirajućih feromagnetskih i nemagnetskih tankih filmova metala. Efekt se očituje kao značajna promjena od 10% do 80% u električnom otporu strukture uslijed primijenjenog magnetskog polja. Za otkriće efekta gigantskog magnetootpora Albertu Fertu i Peteru Grünbergu dodijeljena je Nobelova nagrada za fiziku 2007. godine. Efekt se koristi u komercijalne svrhe u čitačima tvrdih diskova.
