Abstract
Poznato je da os mikrobiota-crijeva-mozak ima velik utjecaj na mozak i mentalno zdravlje. Posljednjih godina se utjecaj ove osi i sastava crijevne mikrobiote na epilepsiju sve više istražuje. Postoje mnogi dokazi interakcije mikrobiote i mozga koji, kao rezultat, imaju pozitivne i negativne utjecaje na učestalost i intenzitet epileptičkih napadaja. Točni mehanizmi ovih interakcija još uvijek se pokušavaju razjasniti. Ovaj rad predstavlja pregled do sada poznatih saznanja o utjecaju crijevne mikrobiote na epilepsiju, mogućim putevima komunikacije crijeva i mozga i potencijalnim alternativnim terapijama za epilepsiju alteracijom sastava crijevne mikrobiote. Takve terapije uključuju primjenu antibiotika, probiotika, određene promjene u prehrani i transplantaciju mikrobiote. Predložene su i mjere koje bi se mogle poduzeti da istraživanja na ovu temu u budućnosti daju bolje i pouzdanije rezultate.
Abstract (english)
It is a well known fact that microbiome-gut-brain axis has an effect on human brain and mental health. Over the last couple of years, an increasing number of studies are conducted regarding the effect this axis and gut microbiome composition has on epilepsy. There is a great deal of evidence that demonstrate positive and negative impacts of gut-brain interaction on the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures. The exact mechanisms underlying these interactions still remain to be completely deciphered. This paper presents a review of known evidence regarding the effect microbiome has on epilepsy, communication pathways between gut and brain as well as potential alternative epilepsy treatments by altering gut microbiome composition. These treatments include the use of antibiotics, probiotics, dietary restrictions and microbiome transplants. This paper also recommends certain measures for future reasarch on this subject that can yield better and more reliable results.
