Abstract
U ovom diplomskom radu opisani su život i djelo talijanskog renesansnog matematičara Girolama Cardana, koji je pridonio razvoju algebre i među prvima se bavio pitanjima vjerojatnosti. U prvom poglavlju opisan je njegov buran život koji je pun raznih kontroverzi. U drugom poglavlju dan je detaljan prikaz dva glavna Cardanova djela: Ars Magna o algebri i Liber de Ludo Aleae o igrama na sreću i vjerojatnosti. U Ars Magni Cardano je opisao rješavanje jednadžbi trećeg i četvrtog stupnja, a tu se i po prvi put u povijesti pojavljuju kompleksni brojevi. U Liber de Ludo Aleae pak nalazimo povijesno prve racionalne ideje o (kombinatornoj) vjerojatnosti.
Abstract (english)
This thesis describes the life and works of the Italian Renaissance mathematician Girolamo Cardano, who made important contributions to the development of algebra and was among the first mathematicians to study the topic of probability. The first chapter describes Cardano’s controversial and adventurous life. In the second chapter we give a detailed description of his two major works, Ars Magna about algebra and Liber de Ludo Aleae about games of chance and probability. In Ars Magna Cardano provides a full solution of cubic and quartic equations, and in this book complex numbers appear for the first time in history. Liber de Ludo Aleae contains the first rational ideas about (combinatorial) probability.
