Pheromones are molecules that serve as primary means of communication between individuals of the same species. This mode of communication is found across a wide range of organisms in the living world. Pheromones are most commonly detected by the vomeronasal organ and its receptors, though they sometimes also activate the main olfactory system. Although pheromones have been shown to have effects in many mammals, the question remains whether they have similar effects in humans. To investigate this hypothesis, numerous experiments have been conducted to identify molecules that exhibit pheromonal effects in humans, as well as the mechanisms by which they are detected in the human body. Several types of steroid molecules, such as androstenone, androstenol, androsterone, androstadienone, copulins, and estratetraenol, have been isolated and shown to influence human behavior and hormonal activity. However, due to methodological limitations in these studies, their pheromonal activity has not yet been scientifically confirmed. Thus, further research is needed to determine whether human pheromones truly exist and how they are recognized by the human body.
