Abstract
Placenta je organ koji postoji samo tijekom gestacije. Njena je uloga hranjenje i održavanje embrija, tj. fetusa te uklanjanje njegovih otpadnih produkata. Međutim, ona u današnjem obliku ne bi postojala da nije došlo do evolucijskog međudjelovanja sisavaca i virusa. Naime, za to specijalizirani virusi, ugradili su se u genome predaka sisavaca i postali su ključan dio normalne fiziologije placente. Ti ugrađeni elementi kodiraju proteine zvane sincitini, koji omogućuju fuziju membrana i imunosupresiju. U nekih sisavaca, prisutnost sincitina ispoljava se kao pojava posebnog sincicija zvanog sinciciotrofoblast. On omogućuje uspostavu bliskog fetomaternalnog kontakta potrebnog za pravilan razvoj. Osim navedenog, ugrađeni virusi potencijalno imaju regulatornu ulogu nad ekspresijom određenih gena u placenti.
Abstract (english)
The placenta is an organ that exists only during gestation. Its role is to feed and maintain the embryo or the fetus and to remove its waste products. However, the placenta wouldn't exist how we know it today if it weren't for the evolutionary interaction between mammals and viruses. Specialized viruses inserted themselves into the genome of the mammalian ancestor, so they became a key component of the normal physiology of the placenta. These inserted elements code for proteins called syncytins, which mediate cell-cell fusion and immunosuppression. Among some mammals., the presence of syncytines is indicated by the formation of a special type of syncytium called syncytiotrophoblast. Besides the aforementioned, the inserted viruses have a potential role in regulating gene expression in the placenta.
