Abstract
Dijatomeje su jednostanični, fotosintetski eukarioti sa silikatnom ljušturicom koje nalazimo široko rasprostranjene u svim vodenim staništima. U posljednje vrijeme posebno su zanimljive zajednice dijatomeja koje se nalaze na drugim živim organizmima. Istraživanja su pokazala da se dijatomeje nalaze na životinjama (morski sisavci, kornjače, rakovi, mekušci, žarnjaci, ptice koje žive uz vodu), makroalgama, morskim cvjetnicama i ostalom vodenom bilju. Epifitske dijatomeje se po taksonomskoj pripadnosti ne razlikuju puno od bentičkih dijatomeja koje žive u okolnoj vodi. Ipak različiti domaćini pružaju različite uvjete mikrostaništa te postoje razlike između zajednica. Epizoičke dijatomeje su mnogo raznolikije od epifitskih. Na mekušcima, rakovima i žarnjacima zajednice dijatomeja su također slične bentičkima. Međutim, epibionti na morskim sisavcima, kornjačama i pticama koje žive uz vodu pokazuju veliku specifičnost ovisno o domaćinu, te su opisane mnoge nove vrste koje žive kao isključivi epibionti na tim životinjama. Na mnoga pitanja o fiziologiji i ekologiji odnosa između epibionta i domaćina nema odgovora, te je ovo područje zanimljivo za nova istraživanja.
Abstract (english)
Diatoms are unicellular, photosynthesising eukaryotes with a silica shell. They can be found in large variety of aquatic habitats. Recently there is a lot of interest in diatoms living on the surface of living organisms. Studies have shown that diatoms can live on animals (sea mammals, turtles, crustaceans, molluscs, hydrozoan, birds that live near water), macroalgae, seagrasses, and other submersed plants. Epiphytic diatoms do not have larger taxonomic diversity than benthic ones. However, different hosts provide different microhabitats and there are differences found between various host-specific communities. Epizoic diatoms are more diverse than epiphytic. On molluscs, crustastaceans and hydrozoans diatom communities are similar to benthic ones. Epibionts on sea mammals, turtles and birds that live near water show greater specificity towards the host. Many new species have been described that live exclusively on these species. Many questions about physiology and ecology of these host-epibiont relationships remain unanswered, so this interesting area is open for future research.
