Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an unpaired number of electrons that can start a chain reaction in the body. They represent a danger for the body, because they react with very important cellular components such as DNA and membranes, on the other hand, at lower concentrations they perform a very important role in signaling of vital processes. Contributing to the onset of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disease and cancer when there is a large imbalance between radicals and antioxidants in the body. Redox homeostasis is a very important term that refers to the balance of production and removal of excess free radicals. Collapse of that balance leads to oxidative stress with implications in the development od several chronic and degenerative diseases suggests that it is very important to ingest antioxidants that prevent the harmfull effects of free radicals. It's necessary to protect the body in the long term from oxidative stress by intake od functional foods and avoid oxidative sources such as cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, stress...
