Abstract
Još od predkolonijalnog razdoblja na teritoriju današnje Ruande, ali i drugih susjednih zemalja gdje su živjeli Ruanđani, nisu postojale podjele na etničke skupine među stanovništvom. To se promijenilo dolaskom kolonijalne vlasti koji su stanovništvo podijelili na dvije glavne etničke skupine, Hutue i Tutsije, te su na čelo države postavili Tutsije pod izlikom da imaju sličnija fizička obilježja Europljanima. Takva segregacija kulminirala je 1994. godine kada je Ruandu obilježio stravičan genocid u kojemu je živote izgubilo više od milijun ljudi, a više od milijuna postalo je izbjeglicama. Nakon genocida ratna zbivanja koja su uključivala i Hutue i Tutsije nastavljena su i u DR Kongu što je bio najsmrtonosniji rat nakon Drugog svjetskog rata. Danas Ruanda doživljava socijalni, ali i gospodarski procvat. Povećala se stopa pismenosti stanovništva, smanjio se broj oboljelih od smrtonosnih bolesti, kao što je virus HIV-a, te je izražen i porast životnog standarda.
Abstract (english)
Since early precolonial time, on the territory of today's Rwanda and the other neighboring countries there weren't any kind of ethnical differentiation between the population. But, after the colonizers conquered those countries they created two main ethnic groups, Hutus and Tutsis, and they put Tutsis in charge of the a country because of their perceived closer resemblance to Europeans. That culminated in 1994. when Rwanda was hit by terrible genocide in which more than a million people died, and more than two million people became refugees. After the genocide in Rwanda, the war moved into the DR Congo, where the conflict between the Rwandans and local population ensued. That was the bloodiest war since the Second World War. Today Rwanda has improved significantly, both economically and socially. There is a marked improvement in GDP per capita rate, higher literacy rate and a significant decline of death caused by diseases, such as AIDS.
