Abstract
Od oko 5000 poznatih vrsta fitoplanktona, oko 75 ima sposobnost proizvodnje toksina za obranu od predatora ili smanjivanje kompeticije s drugim vrstama. Proizvodnja fikotoksina je najizraženija u razdobljima cvjetanja, kada je velika gustoća populacije. Na cvjetanje fitoplanktona utjecaj imaju razni čimbenici, poput temperature vode, morskih struja i koncentracije hranidbenih tvari. Životinje koje se hrane filtriranjem, poput školjkaša i nekih riba, fikotoksine koncentriraju u svojim tkivima. Konzumacija kontaminiranih školjkaša i riba ima toksični učinak na morske sisavce, ptice i čovjeka. Kod čovjeka konzumacija toksina može uzrokovati različite simptome, uključujući i smrt. Toksične vrste fitoplanktona rasprostranjene su u morima i kopnenim vodama subpolarnih, umjerenih i tropskih širina. U morima i oceanima najčešći su uzročnici toksičnosti dinoflagelati i dijatomeje, a u kopnenim vodama toksine proizvode većinom cijanobakterije.
Abstract (english)
Of about 5000 known species of phytoplankton, about 75 have the ability to produce toxins in defense against predators or reducing competition with other species. Ficotoxins production is mostly pronounced in periods of bloom, when the population density is high. Number of factors, such as water temperature, ocean currents and concentrations of nutrients have an impact on phytoplankton blooms. Filter-feeding animals, like shellfish and some species of fish concentrate ficotoxins in their tissues. Consumption of contaminated shellfish or fish have a toxic effect to marine mammals, birds and humans. Human consumption of ficotoxins can cause a variety of simptoms, including death. Toxic phytoplankton species are widespread in oceans and freshwaters of subpolar, temperate and tropical latitudes. In the oceans, the most common cause of toxicity are dinoflagellates and diatoms. In freshwaters, toxins are produced mainly by cyanobacteria.
