Abstract
Abnormalna aktivnost središnjeg serotoninskog (5-HT) sustava povezuje se sa alkoholizmom, depresijom, impulsivnom agresivnošću i suicidalnim ponašanjem. Središnji serotonergički neuroni i trombociti dijele slične biokemijske procese, te se stoga u svrhu lakšeg proučavanja određenih psihopatoloških stanja vezanih za promjene središnjeg 5-HT ponekad koriste trombociti kao lako dostupan periferni model. Ovisnici o alkoholu su skloni razvitku suicidalnog ponašanja. Suicidalno je ponašanje u psihijatrijskih bolesnika povezano sa sniženom koncetracijom trombocitnog 5-HT. U studiji je sudjelovalo 359 muških i 90 ženskih ovisnika o alkoholu koji nisu uzimali nikakve lijekove, te 425 zdravih muških i 156 zdravih ženskih ispitanika. Ovisnici o alkoholu podijeljeni su prema spolu, komorbidnoj depresiji, suicidalnom ponašanju i suicidalnim pokušajima. Koncentracija trombocitnog 5-HT bila je značajno snižena u ovisnika o alkoholu prema kontrolnim ispitanicima, no nije se značajno razlikovala između ispitanika ovisnika o alkoholu sa ili bez suicidalnog ponašanja ili onih koji su pokušali ili nikad nisu pokušali počiniti suicid. Prema tome, rezultati su uputili na zaključak da se koncentracija trombocitnog 5-HT ne može koristiti kao periferni pokazatelj suicidalnog ponašanja u ovisnika o alkoholu.
Abstract (english)
Abnormal activity of the central serotonergic (5-HT) system is associated with alcoholism, depression, impulsivity, aggression and suicidal behavior. Central serotonergic synaptosomes and platelets share similar biochemical processes, and therefore platelets could be used as easy obtainable peripheral models for studies of particular psychopathologies related to alterations of the central 5-HT. Chronic alcoholic patients are prone to develop suicidal behavior. Suicidal behavior is associated with lower platelet 5-HT concentration in psychiatric patients. The study included 359 male and 90 female alcoholic, medication-free patients, and 425 healthy male and 156 healthy female control subjects. Chronic alcoholic subjects were subdivided according to the sex, comorbid depression, suicidal behavior and suicidal attempts. Platelet 5-HT concentration was significantly lower in chronic alcoholic patients than in healthy subjects, however it did not differ significantly between alcoholic patients with or without suicidal behavior, or between those who tried or did not try to attempt suicide. Therefore, these results suggested that platelet 5-HT concentration could not be used as a peripheral marker of suicidal behavior in alcoholic patients.
